Hi Gordon,
I recently sent instructions on how to upload TextExpander snippets
from Mac to iPhone. There's a good support page that the developer
maintains at SmileOnMyMac -- just Google "TextExpander Touch support
FAQ". Although you can't currently sync snippets from your Mac to
your iDevices, you can transfer them from you Mac (on the same
wireless network) or, in your case, you might prefer to use the option
to upload these from your server URL by choosing the option to "Add
Group via URL" instead of "Add via Local Network". I've pasted in the
relevant bits from my email response and added the bits about syncing
and using a server.
From the TextExpander Touch support page FAQ:
? Can I sync with the TextExpander snippets on my Mac?
Syncing is not yet available between TextExpander on the Mac and
TextExpander touch. You can replace snippet groups on your iPhone with
the latest version from your Mac, but you cannot integrate new
snippets in the same group via syncing.
Tip: We recommend setting up a group for snippets you create on your
iPhone, keeping them separate from the groups on your Mac. Then you
can periodically update the iPhone with the latest version of snippet
groups from your Mac without erasing snippets created on the iPhone.
? Can I transfer my snippet groups from TextExpander on the Mac in
TextExpander touch via WiFi?
If you use TextExpander for the Mac, it is very convenient to add the
snippet groups on your Mac to TextExpander touch via your local
network. Important: Your Mac and your iPhone (or iPod touch) must be
on the same WiFi network. "Share groups on local network" must be
checked in TextExpander preferences on your Mac.
1) From the Groups screen of TextExpander touch, tap the plus (+)
button at the bottom.
2) Tap "Add via Local Network".
3) Tap the name of the Mac you'd like to add from.
4) Tap the name of the group you'd like to add.
5) An alert will appear in your TextExpander Preference Pane on your
Mac, asking you to confirm that you want to send the group to your
iPhone. Click "Send".
These instructions worked for me. With my Mac and my iPod Touch (or
iPad) on the same wireless network, double-tapping the "Add" button at
the bottom right corner of the "Groups" screen, and then double-
tapping the "Add via Local Network" button option brought up a screen
named "TextExpander Devices" and I double tapped "Esther's Macbook".
Then, a screen with a list of snippet definition groups on my Macbook
appeared, and I double-tapped the name of the snippet group I wanted
to add to TextExpander on my iPod Touch.
? How do I add a snippets file via a URL?
First, you need to upload a snippets file to your server. Here's an
example URL for a snippets file:
http://www.smileonmymac.com/te/example.textexpander
Then follow these steps:
1) Under Groups, tap the plus (+) icon.
2) Tap "Add Group via URL."
3) Enter the URL location of your snippet file.
HTH. Cheers,
Esther
Post by Gordon SmithHi
Finally, I have this working properly! For some odd reason which I
don't quite understand, when I tried this again yesterday, I closed
the programme window which was previously open, showing me all the
snippets. When I pressed Command+0 again to re-open the window, for
some odd reason it started doing what it was supposed to do.
Since then, it's behaved perfectly and I have it set to open at log-
in. I did that by adding it to the dock, then enabling the "Open at
Log-In" option.
Now the next task is to get it to sync with the iDevices.
